What tools are available for students and staff in the core Google Apps for Education suite?
Students (5th-8th): Gmail, Calendar, Contacts, Drive, Sites, Classroom

3. What's a brief description of these core tools?
Google Calendar: Organize schedules and share events and calendars with others.
Google Contacts: Organize personal contacts and create personal mailing lists.
Google Docs: Share documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Collaborate in real-time with your team or with your whole school. You can publish final documents to the entire world, too.
Google Sites: Work together to keep related documents, web content and other information in one place, on one site.
Gmail: Students will have access to email. They will only be permitted to email staff members.
Classroom: Students can be invited to join their teachers' classroom pages. On these pages, students can view, complete and turn in assignments.
5. How much does Google Apps for Education cost?
Google Apps for Education is a free service Google offers to all educational institutions.
6. Will there be advertisements on Holy Name's Google apps site?
No
7. Will Google Apps always be available for me?
With Google Apps for Education are guaranteed to be available at least 99.9% of the time, ensuring that users have access when they need it. The Google Apps team is committed to providing our school with the best level of service.
8. How much storage is currently available?
Documents: 512,000 characters -- which is usually about hundred pages, depending on things like font size. Uploaded document files that are converted to Google documents format can’t be larger than 1MB.
Spreadsheets: 400,000 cells, with a maximum of 256 columns per sheet. Uploaded spreadsheet files that are converted to Google spreadsheets format can’t be larger than 20MB, and need to be under 400,000 cells and 256 columns/sheet.
Presentations: Presentations created in Google Docs can be up to 10MB -- which is about 200 slides. Uploaded presentation files that are converted into Google presentations format can also be up to 10MB.
Drawings: We’ve never seen anyone make a drawing that was too big (but that’s not a dare).
Sites: 100 MB per site
Note: storage limitations are adjusted to reflect our customers' needs.

Permission Forms
Below are the permission forms for parents to sign so that their students can have access to Google Apps for Education at Holy Name Catholic School. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions:
Why use Google Apps for Education?
• To provide students with access to current technology applications and free tools designed for collaboration with other students and teachers
• To give students the ability to work on their documents both in school and at home - anytime and anywhere from any Internet connected device
• To help students work collaboratively, engage in peer-editing of documents
• To facilitate “paperless” transfer of work between students and teachers
• To provide adequate long-term storage space for student work
• A potential cost savings in terms of software licensing and document storage
How are Holy Name and Google linked together?
The Google agreement with Holy Name provides access to Google applications and storage. While Google hosts these services off-site, the school maintains the ability to manage users, groups, and settings, much like other locally hosted systems. This means that we can grant and remove user access, and control other settings to ensure a safe and secure collaboration environment for students and teachers.
What personal student information and student education records will be stored in Google Apps for Education?
The terms of the Google contract with Holy Name mandate that we must have parental permission for the use of Google Apps for Education. On the Google permission form that parents are asked to sign, it states that "information about my child will be collected and stored electronically." Google does not request any personal information from students and the school does not provide personal student data (ex. birthdate, address, phone number, grades, test scores) to Google. That information resides in the Holy Name student information system and is not stored nor available to Google.
The permission form also states that "my student's education records stored in Google Apps for Education may be accessible to someone other than my student and Holy Name School". Examples of student education records in Google are assignments, notes, calendars and projects created by the student.
How are students identified in Google Apps for Education?
Students will log in using the following pattern:
User name: first name initial, last name @hncschool.com
Password: computer password
